“In 2013 myself and Brendan Begley travelled together on tour with a
band called Folk the Recession. There was much talk about the upcoming 2016 centenary celebrations, so we decided to go in search of the songs and their writers. Brendan sent me the text of the Douglas Hyde speech Necessity to De Anglicize from 1892 and soon after reading the powerful text our rambles became a mission. We read libraries of books on the subject, found all sorts of hidden songs, and discovered the character of those involved in the rising. The Easter rising was only one chapter in a truly epic journey that started with a dream to re discover a nation. While we discovered much hardship, sorrow, death, and cruelty, we also discovered joy and humour in a very gifted, courageous and dedicated people. My journey continued throughout the War of Independence.

I have known Mick O Dea since childhood and we both share an interest in this period of our history. The events have inspired both of us to create new work, so I approached Mick and asked him to contribute some of his beautiful art to the production. The Ballad of The Crimson warrior is a gift to those who dared to dream.” MIKE HANRAHAN.
